Today in the House of Commons - Connor McDavid
Yesterday (April 11, 2017), I had the opportunity to rise in the House of Commons to pay homage to an outstanding member of our community.
Mr Speaker, I proudly rise today to bring national attention to Newmarket's newest hero....Connor McDavid.
In only his second year in the NHL as an Edmonton Oiler, he led the League. In scoring with 30 goal and 70 assists. 100 points, capturing the Art Ross Trophy
He is, in my opinion, one of the greatest hockey players in the world right now. He played minor hockey in both Newmarket and Aurora, and with our local Triple A team, the York Simcoe Express. Connor has never forgotten his roots. In fact, last year, after his injury, he was skating in Newmarket at the Training Rinks - while the tykes were practicing at the same time. He allowed a group of 6 year olds to watch him practice - the wide eyed enthusiasm was amazing. My son was one of those boys. He will never forget being that close to greatness.
Connor also supports Newmarket`s drive for community outdoor arena, and has been instrumental in the fundraising.
Connor, on behalf of everyone in Newmarket Aurora, I want to congratulate you and your parents Brian and Kelly on a wonderful season, and wish you all the best in the playoffs. I am looking forward to an – Oilers – Leafs Stanley Cup Final! Go Connor!
Message to Students attending the 100th Anniversary Ceremonies at Vimy Ridge
This week, students from Newmarket and Aurora have departed on a trip to the battlefields of Europe, learning about Canada's history in the First and Second World War. Students will take part in ceremonies marking the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, and honor the sacrifice made by our soldiers . As they embark on this trip, I wanted to highlight the importance of this milestone, and wish them a Bon Voyage!

Tribute to Donald S. Affleck, QC
Mr. Speaker, I rise today to pay tribute to Donald S. Affleck, QC, who passed away on January 25th.
Don was a graduate of Victoria College at University of Toronto and a member of its football team. He graduated from the U of T`s Law School and practiced law for over 50 years
He acted as a NAFTA Arbitrator; Counsel to the standing committee of the House of Commons on Finance, Trade and Economic Affairs; and Chief Counsel to the Royal Commission on Newspapers. Don acted in many notable competition law and trade practice cases. He co-authored of Canadian Competition Law, a widely-recognized authority.
Don was not only an architect for competition law in Canada, He was also instrumental in establishing one of the first boutique litigation law firms in Toronto, having co-founded Affleck Greene McMurtry LLP 25 years ago. I had the honour of working with him for many years.
He was a mentor, and a friend, not only to me but to all who had the privilege of knowing him. The entire legal community has experienced a great loss.
To his colleagues at the firm, to his entire family, and most importantly to his wife Shannon I offer my deepest sympathies.
Don, I will miss you. Rest in Peace.
Happy Holidays & Merry Christmas from Kyle Peterson, MP Newmarket-Aurora!

Central York Fire Services 2016 Annual Recognition Ceremony
I am proud to rise today to pay tribute to some of the outstanding members of Central York Fire Services in Newmarket-Aurora. On November 3, I was pleased to attend the Annual Recognition Ceremony where firefighters were honoured for their exemplary service.
I was particularly pleased to present the Federal Exemplary and Long Service Medals & Bars to: Tom Hunter, Jason Shepstone, Jonathan Healy, Mike Jacques, Bill Lorimer, Kevin Saunders, Kevin Saxton, Les Chaisson, Rick Roylance, Jim Allen, Jim Davis, and the 40 Year Federal & Provincial Long Service Bar to Chief Ian Laing.
Unfortunately, Mr. Speaker, the night did have a sombre tone as Gregg Tremblay, a firefighter with over 30 years of service suddenly passed away the day before the ceremony. His medal was presented to Firefighter Jim Allen, a lifelong friend. Congratulations to all for their dedication. To all men and women of Central York Fire Services, and all first Responders in Newmarket-Aurora and across Canada - thank you for your service to all of us.
Two sports Hall of fames in Newmarket - Aurora
Mr Speaker, Sports play an important role in all communities across Canada. My riding of Newmarket-aurora is no exception. We are blessed to have two sports Hall of fames in our community. Recently, the Aurora Sports Hall of Fame moved into its new location at the Stronach-Aurora Recreation Centre, and inducted 4 new members: Olympian Karen Stemmle, NHLers Michael “Mike” Murphy, Mike “Kitch” Kitchen , and Figure Skating Coach Sheldon W. Galbraith. The Newmarket Sports Hall of Fame, located at the Magna Centre, also recently inducted three new members, Stingrays Swim Coach Alan Swanston, International Handball Champion Harold McClean, and the 1950`s Newmarket`s Gorman Smoke Rings Hockey Team. I was proud to attend the induction ceremony and to celebrate the rich history of sports excellence in our riding. Thank you to the volunteers at both Halls of Fame, and thank you for helping make our community the great place it is.
